Frequently Asked Questions
What Hardware do I need?
The simple answer is an Internet connected device with a web browser, the Motorola DS4208 barcode scanner and the Brother QL-720NW label printer will get the job done.
A more detailed look
There is no special hardware required, beyond an Internet connected device and web browser, to access PDEvidence. To complete the package you’ll want to have a barcode scanner and a label printer available. Any barcode scanner capable of reading Code128 barcodes will work with PD Evidence. We recommend a scanner that can also read PDF417 barcodes since that is the type of barcode found on the back of US driver’s licenses.
What kind of software do I need?
Nothing. PDEvidence runs entirely within your web browser.
What operating systems and web browsers do you support?
We have tested and use PDEvidence with Windows, Mac and Linux. We have used these operating systems in combination with the Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers.
Does PDEVIDENCE work with Terminal Server and/or CITRIX environments?
Yes. As long as you have an Internet connection and a web browser, you’re ready to go.
Where is my data stored?
The PDEVIDENCE Evidence Management System™ database live in an encrypted state in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) computing cloud platform. The platform handles hosting, update deployment and automated backups. “Data centers are staffed 24×7 by trained security guards, and access is authorized strictly on a least privileged basis. Environmental systems are designed to minimize the impact of disruptions to operations. And multiple geographic regions and Availability Zones allow you to remain resilient in the face of most failure modes, including natural disasters or system failures”, Amazon AWS Security Center. You can read more about AWS by visiting the WikiPedia article on Amazon Web Services.
How Secure is PDEVIDENCE?
Very Secure. The PDEVIDENCE Evidence Management System™ encrypts data in motion and at rest to provide end-to-end security. Our delivery method provides the best availability from any device class anywhere Internet access is available.
Why can’t I just buy PDEVIDENCE in one lump sum instead of paying a subscription?
The PDEVIDENCE Evidence Management System™ is offered as Software as a Service (SaaS), meaning it’s under constant development and securely hosted by us. PDEVIDENCE incorporates the latest advances in law enforcement while taking advantage of modern web technologies. Enhancements and new features are delivered seamlessly and automatically to all of our users. PDEVIDENCE is not like legacy software that you must install on each computer. Take PDEVIDENCE anywhere you have an Internet connection and on any device!
What Police Records Management Systems do you work with?
The PDEvidence Evidence Management System currently has an interface with the Pennsylvania cNET project. We are a web-based solution under active development so partnering with your records management system is easily within reach. In the mean time, we offer the ability to have supplemental narratives e-mailed to you for inclusion in your records management system, if desirable.
How do I setup my evidence label printer?
The PDEvidence Evidence Management System has been tested with the Brother QL-580N and the Brother QL-720NW, both using the Brother DK-2205 labels. The DK-2205 is a 2.4″ x 100′ roll. See below for detailed configuration settings. Your screen may vary depending upon operating system, driver version and specific printer model.
How do I setup my evidence barcode scanner?
Out of the box, your barcode scanner should be able to scan PDEVIDENCE barcode labels. You’ll want to configure the barcode scanner to automatically send the ENTER key after each scan to make life easier scanning multiple items in the PDEVIDENCE Evidence Management System. Print the below attached PDF and follow the instructions for “ADD AN ENTER KEY”.
Help! My barcode scanner isn’t scanning anything!
If you’re having problems scanning barcodes, try this simple test. Open Notepad on the computer that has the barcode scanner. While the cursor is flashing in the Notepad window, scan one of your barcodes. You should see the Item Code appear and the cursor should automatically return to the next line. If nothing appears, it’s likely that the scanner is not properly configured. Are you using a Motorola / Symbol / Zebra style scanner? Try scanning this barcode from right here on your screen to reset the scanner to defaults.
Next, you’ll need to scan the configuration codes to program the scanner to add the ENTER key after each scan.
